If you're an Australian artist self-releasing your own music, there's an industry membership available through the Australian Independent Record Labels Association - well worth claiming. The application takes about five minutes and costs nothing for the entry tier.
What This Membership Is
The Australian Independent Record Labels Association is the non-profit body supporting Australia's independent music sector. They've been championing independent artists and labels since 1996, they're part of the global Worldwide Independent Network, and they run an annual awards night, a music industry conference, and a weekly newsletter spotlighting independent Australian releases.
In short: it's one of the few organisations genuinely built to help independent artists be seen - no label or publicist required.
Why It's Worth It
A few good reasons to spend five minutes on this:
- The entry tier is completely free. The Artist membership, for self-releasing Australian artists and bands, costs nothing.
- There are paid tiers too for labels and bigger operations - these come with broader benefits, and pricing is set independently and subject to change.
- You gain access to member resources - industry guides, documents, and partner content available to members.
- You become eligible for the weekly New Release promotion and charts - a genuine opportunity for your new music to be seen.
- You join the eligible pool for awards nominations and conference invitations.
- It's a real, recognised credential. Listing it on your artist bio or profile is a small but meaningful signal that you're operating professionally.
Membership opens doors rather than guaranteeing outcomes - it puts you in the room, and from there, it's about what you do with the opportunity.
Eligibility - What You'll Need
The Artist tier has a few simple eligibility points:
- You're an Australian artist or band self-releasing your own music
- You're an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- You (or your business) hold at least 51% ownership of your own masters
- Each application is reviewed by the Board before approval
Approval isn't automatic - applying is the first step, and the process is straightforward and welcoming.
How to Join
- Visit the AIR membership page
- Look for the Artist tier - listed as free, for self-releasing Australian artists and bands
- Complete the application with your artist or project details, confirming your eligibility along the way
- Submit, and the team will review and confirm. Membership follows their financial year (renewing around 30 June), so you may need to confirm or reapply annually
That's the whole process for the Artist tier.
